Moonglow is another one of our new friends. She uses lots of different Star Sprinkles to make the colors of the sunset ~ Rainbow Brite "Friends Forever" Coloring Book (2005)

We were charged with coming up with some new colors & characters to extend the line, and I thought a light colored, pastel doll would be fabulous... with iridescent colors, and pastel accents.. Originally the doll had white hair! I'll be no one knows that! But my idea for the white hair (I thought it would look more like moonlight that way) was overridden by our management... they thought the white hair would make her look like an old lady! In retrospect, I think they were right. So, other than the hair color, Moonglow looks just like the prototype.

~Stefanie Eskander, (2010)

With her is Nite Sprite, a very dark navy blue Night Sprite who carries her Gold Star Shine crystals for her.

While Moonglow didn't play a huge role on the TV program, she was a popular character in Germany, where her name is "Sandra Silbermond"

Nite Sprite

Nite Sprite

Nite Sprite is Moonglow's faithful Sprite who helps her keep the night sky shiny and bright. He carries with him a large bag which holds all the gold Star Sprinkles that Moonglow uses. Unlike the other Rainbow Land Sprites, he has cresent moons instead of stars on his head. He also speaks "sprite speak" like the other Sprites.

Spelling Controversy

Fan Fact:

Many fans dispute the name for the character "Moonglow" and insist that the correct spelling is without the "W". The correct spelling is "M-O-O-N-G-L-O-W". It was spelled this way both in North America and in the UK. The UK/German Dress-up doll package is spelled "Moonglow", the back of the US Dress-up doll package is spelled Moonglow, The insert in every doll advertised "Moonglow" and in the re-release of the 2004 and 2009 dolls the spelling is "Moonglow". When asked about the spelling, Hallmark has also been the first to say the character's name as M-O-O-N-G-L-O-W.

UPDATE: June 2010 www.rainbowbrite.co.uk contacted Moonglow's Creator, a designer with Mattel who also confirmed that the character's name is spelled with a "w". All names are copy written upon creation.[1]

UPDATE: April 2013 We were able to review the original Scripts for the episode Rainbow Night and can confirm the spelling of the character's name is correct with the "w". [2]

So, where did the "Moonglo" spelling come from?

"Moonglo" spelling on VHS Box

Behind the scenes as new characters were being developed the name "Moonglo" appeared with an asterisk at the end of the name with the description of the episode "Rainbow Night". This asterisk was to symbolize the spelling was not finally approved, but wasn't corrected.

The correct spelling was with a W, but this episode description later appeared on the package for the VHS Tape "Invasion of Rainbow Land" included the episode "Rainbow Night" and lists the character as "Moonglo". This was a single misprint as it was on the "Starlight/Starlite Saves the Day" Golden Book.

It was released in 1987, at the end of the franchise run, so no additional information was released. Most fans will and often do miss-spell the name as they feel it fits the "unique" spellings of the other characters.

Trivia

1: Moonglow was designed by Mattel
2: Moonglow's hair was originally designed to be white, however was changed so the character wouldn't look "old"
3: Even though Moonglow was designed by Mattel, Nite Sprite was not. Nite Sprite was a creation of the writers for the TV show.
4: The final drawn version of Moonglow is NOT the first look of the character, and according to the designer, was not supposed to look like "Alice in Wonderland" though it is often compared to that by fans.
